The Asus M50 is for the "New Adopter" in all of us, I suppose. It has sexy new USB 3.0 ports that may or may not work yet, a possibly interesting ATI Radeon HD3650 with 1 Gig of VRAM (...but you know, I seem to stick to NVidia, and you can get the M50 with a 9500M GS also), and it has a wide selection of CPU options to choose from. (yes, Intel has hopelessly cluttered the market that they now dominate)

If I were outfitting a corporate need, I would go with the Gateway because it is probably (sight unseen) the more stable platform.
However, since both laptops come infected with Vista... what does stable mean anyway? I would max the RAM in either case.

Now if it were for myself, it would be the ASUS M50, because I like "new technology smell", and I must say that it has been very seldom that I have been bitten. (...1988, dBase IV roll out ala Les Miserables!) In proof of this, I recently bought an HP Deskto with Core 2 Duo. Did I need Core 2 Duo? No, just like an SUV doesn't need a V8 engine... but its cool anyway!

The 1 Gig ATI Video is part of that temptation as well, if only to tell a friend that my laptop has a gig of Video RAM. If I were playing a particular Game that I loved... (Everquest, MS-Solitare, MMPOG, or whatever) I would check the user feedback and see which chipset gets raves from the fanboys of that gameset. Hitachi is also involved in the ASUS machine, and I have had good luck with Hitachi laptops in the past. The ASUS-Hitachi can probably be thrown farther across the office cafeteria and still remain functional vs the Gateway which may come apart if you look at it wrong. (mostly consumer perception here... but a qualified consumer perception, I think)

So, it depends what you value. The ASUS is like a 2008 Fiat, and the Gateway is more of an Audi without the power windows... and thats about as far as I care to take that analogy. Ma Se Ghe Pensu!

Bottom Line: M50. Its new, its cool, and that's a value that der ubergeek can take to the bank!
